How to format a drive in Windows 10 | windows 7 | windows server 2016 | 2012

When you want to format a drive or a Pen drive or a flash drive in windows 10 then are two steps available one way you can format is using a command “format” and another way is disk management GUI tool, both do same, this article explains how to format any drive, let’s try command way.

Format D: /q

Above command quickly formats the drive, you will be prompted a warning message as you going to lose data inside the drive, make sure you copied it before press y to continue.

Here are some important parameters of the format command

/c            NTFS only. it takes NTFS file system as default

/x            Causes the volume to dismount,

/?            Displays help at the command prompt.

/q           Performs a quick format.

<Volume> You can Specify  the mount point, volume name, or drive letter

Quick Format using a command.

Example

c:\raj>format D: /fs:ntfs /v:NewVolume /q
The type of the file system is NTFS.
WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK
DRIVE F: WILL BE LOST!
Proceed with Format (Y/N)? y
QuickFormatting 256,000M
Creating file system structures.
Format complete.
   249.3 GB total disk space.
     249.3 GB are available.

Tip: The above command also helps to repair your pen drive or flash drive, when you difficulty to format using the disk manager you can use the command prompt way to format the drive without any issue.

How to format using Disk Management

Open the disk management, right-click on the start menu and open disk management,  you will find the all the drives available on your local machine, see the below screenshot,  right-click on any drive you want to format and click on format option and then you will be prompted for a file system to choose, either you can choose NTFS or FAT32, both file system works for types of jobs in terms of storing you can choose anything, they have their own technique to store the data.
